Chapter Fourteen
“Brought you something.” Cody passed the paper bag to Damo, who sat by the tower window and opened it with an eager grin.
“Awww, maaaate.” Damo pulled out the tart, displaying the treat to the other guys. “Bakewell tart from Mod Cafe in Freo. My fave! Thanks. You’re a legend!”
“What about the rest of us?” Chalkers asked, spinning in his chair and scratching his coarse salt-and-pepper hair.
Cody shrugged. “I didn’t know what you’d like.”
Chalkers stared at him, his lined face incredulous. “Are you fair dinkum? You didn’t get us anything?”
“Oh, the old sea dog’s gonna have your balls for brekkie!” Ronnie howled with laughter, looking between Chalkers and Cody. “I know who’s scrubbing the toilet block later!”
Cody tried not to smile, but he couldn’t keep a straight face. He pulled a bigger paper bag out of his backpack. “Didn’t know what you’d like, so I got a bunch of stuff.” He handed over the bag of squares and tarts and cookies. He had an extra mint-choc slice saved for Liam in the fridge at the studio.
A smile broke through Chalkers’ scowl as he took the bag and peered in. “Caramel slice is mine, boys.” Then he ruffled Cody’s hair, and Cody couldn’t stop grinning. Every day he loved the job more.
Bickie came up from the back and happily grabbed a big oatmeal biscuit. He watched something through the glass. “Mate, it’s never going to happen.”
“I believe in the power of their dreams!” Damo insisted, swallowing a big bite of tart and mumbling, “Ten bucks says they nail this pyramid.”
Cody stood behind Damo’s chair, finding the source of debate about thirty feet away on the sand. A group of female backpackers, who were possibly drunk already at eleven a.m., were trying to make a human pyramid. They scrambled on top of each other in bikinis, boobs swaying.
It was a cloudy day with not much happening on the beach, although the weather was supposed to clear. There were people around, but it wasn’t crowded yet aside from surfers at the north end enjoying the big swells.
“You’re on,” Bickie said. “Gotta love the Pommies. They’re always up for it no matter the weather.”
Liam came in from patrol, and he joined them by the glass, shooting a shy little smile his way, so quick Cody might have imagined it, making his heart swoop. Seeing the women’s shenanigans, Liam laughed, his face alight in a way that made Cody want to take him into the toilet or down in the garage or anywhere, really, and kiss him until they could barely breathe.
He wanted to fuck him again and hold him and wake up with him. He wanted Liam safe under the blankets, sleep-muddled with bedhead, stretching his big limbs, kissing him with morning breath.
So far, Liam had insisted on going home and not staying past midnight. Apparently in his mind, that was a respectable time to be leaving a mate’s place. Any later, and they’d clearly be found out. Which was ridiculous, since Cody’s neighbors surely didn’t give two shits about who visited him.
